Udhagamandalam Administration
Ooty is the district headquarters of Nilgiris district. Nilgiri district was originally a home to many tribals. Badaga, Toda, Kotah, Kurumba, Irula and Toda tribes were mainly inhabitant around what is now known as Ooty region. The British discovered this city and later developed it as the seat of Government. Currently, the Nilgiri district has six taluks, Ooty being one among these Taluks. Ooty is also locally called Udhagamandalam and abbreviated as Udghai. Udhagamandalam state assembly came into force with the elections of 1957.The economy of Udhagamandalam district majorly relies on its tourism, medicine manufacturing, agriculture and photographic films.

Located in the Nilgiri hills and connected by Coimbatore and Mysore highways, Udhagamandalam city is an important tourist location. At the height of 2248 mts from mean sea level, the city enjoys a refreshing climate ranging between 50 degrees to 27 degree Celsius all through the year. The amiable, city receives an average rainfall of 1020mm and is relatively dry in the month of January.
Udhagamandalam Municipality has five departments. Stated below are the five departments and their respective functions.
General Administration-General Administration Establishment, Records, Accounts, Correspondence, Treasury
Engineering - Engineering Works, Water Supply and Operation and Maintenance
Public Health- Public Health Preventive Health Care, Conservancy, Vital Statistics
Revenue- Revenue Billing and Collection of Taxes, Charges and Fees
Town Planning- Town Planning Administration of Master Plan
Every department is controlled by a head, who functions as per the municipal manual. These departmental heads directly report to the commissioner.
Primarily this land was a home to many tribals. John Sullivian established his office in Udhagamandalam as the collector of Coimbatore and commenced developmental activities here with the backing of Government. After independence the city saw a faster growth under the Udhagamandalam municipality business plans. Udhagamandalam municipality faces the challenge of preserving the scenic beauty and fragile economy of the hills along with the development of native population. Hence the Regional Planning Authority for Nilgiris District and an architectural and aesthetics aspects committee scrutinizes, controls and advices the municipality on all development applications.

Udhagamandalam town is administered by a Municipal Council with an Executive Authority and his team of competent officers. Municipality of Udhagamandalam was embodied on 3.10.1866 and became a special grade municipality on 20-7-87 covering an administrative area of 30.67sq.kms and a population of 88422 as per the 2011 Census. All matters relating to General Administration in this Municipality is supervised by the Executive Authority called commissioner and the authority next to him called manager. Udhagamandalam Municipality is governed by The Tamil Nadu District Municipalities Act 1920.Udhagamandalam Municipality has five departments.
